The American Rum Landscape

Beyond the Tropical Stereotype

American rum has often been overshadowed by images of tropical cocktails and pirates. Across the country, distillers are working with molasses and native sugarcane, different yeasts and dramatically different climates. Those regional choices can create spirits every bit as distinctive as the places they come from.

Chapter 01

The Barrel That Started it.

On a barrel-hunting trip in the Northeast, Seth Benhaim came across a distillery that was closing its doors. In the rickhouse sat American rum, fifteen years old, maturing in bourbon barrels. It was intense, layered and unlike anything he expected from a domestic still.

It was also being flavored, diluted and sold in one-liter bottles as well rum. Great American rum was already here. It had simply never been bottled with the respect given to a single malt or a bourbon.

Chapter 02

Bottled Like a Single Malt.

Mainland exists to fix that. We find the oldest casks from the diverse climates of America, from Pasadena to the Louisiana bayou to the Florida coast, and bottle them the way an independent Scotch bottler would. One barrel per release. Barrel proof. Nothing added, nothing filtered out.

Every label carries the distillery’s coordinates, the year, the cask and the bottle count. You always know exactly what you are drinking, and where it came from.

The Founder

Seth Benhaim

Seth has spent more than fifteen years building spirits brands, founding Infuse Spirits and Broken Barrel Whiskey and earning more than 100 industry awards across vodka, rum and whiskey. Mainland is his most personal project: a search for the quintessential American rum, one barrel at a time.

At Infuse Spirits, his approach centered on real botanicals. At Broken Barrel Whiskey, custom oak staves became a way to explore finishing. Discovering aged American rum led him toward independent bottling: choosing exceptional casks and letting their character speak for itself.

Our Standards

Nothing to Hide

Mainland releases are bottled at cask or still strength, without dilution, artificial coloring, added sugar or flavorings, and without chill filtration. State, cask, age and proof are part of the story on every label. Regional differences are something to preserve, not smooth away.
